Benissa is located in Alicante at the Costa Brava Spain. It is a town area that is rather small and amongst the oldest in the region. It links calp and Moraira covering a 4km coastline. Here you will be able to see things like bays, coves, beaches as well as cliffs. There are also vineyards, palm trees and mountains in the area. You can also witness various models of village houses whose doorsteps face the streets. There are also internal courtyards that are well spaced and country estates where vineyards are planted.
The location of Benissa is near other areas that surround it which still lie on the Costa Blanca. It therefore becomes very interesting to actually visit some of the places while you are on holiday in Benissa.
The origin of the town name was from Arabic which means the sons of Christ. The former inhabitants of Benissa were joined by people from Aragon, Catalonia as well as the Pyrenees. It is an area that was occupied by Muslims for quite a long time. The citizens that were Muslims were totally expelled by the year 1609. The region was attacked by African pirates for a long time during the 16th and 15th centuries.
The areas to look out for while in Benissa include the town center which is very medieval. The town square is quite narrow and has several churches too. There are many historic buildings to see and explore in this town and you will notice that they are very well decorated with heraldic shields and balconies made of iron. The Torres Orduna palace is also quite a thrilling place and it is a very popular center for culture. There is also a library located here. The town is very strong in catholic traditions. There is the Franciscan seminary which has been able to offer education to followers of Franciscan all over Spain.
Transportation is very easy when one is in Benissa. You can get to Benissa navigating from Valencia or Alicante. The N332 and A-7 highways facilitate transportation to and from Benissa. There is also a railway that connects to Alicante and also connects to Benidorm. It is therefore a rather accessible area.
There are various festivals that are held in the area every year that are definitely worth a visit. This are held at different times of the year. The medieval fair is held in January while the patron saint of the town is celebrated in April. The battle between moors and Christians is also celebrated in the month of June. All these are great times to be in Benissa and there is a lot to look forward to when one settles for this amazing town for holiday.
